Noel Gallagher's Flying High Again













Truth be told, we Yanks just can’t seem to see the glass as half-full when it comes to certain things. Take the beautiful game for example. It’s hard to say why, but Americans have never been able to get their head around real football – the ballet on the pitch – soccer, for all you gridiron fanatics.

It must be in part due to our inborn inability to appreciate the game’s nuances – “Yeah, it missed by an inch…but it did miss.”

And it’s the same innate negativity that has compelled Oasis’ U.S. fans to dejectedly regard the 2009 breakup of brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher as a sign of the apocalypse. But the optimistic reality is that the demise of the Britpop icons was actually addition through subtraction – with the best evidence being Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds debut album.

The former Oasis lead guitarist and principal songwriter’s eponymous unveiling debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart in October 2011 and incredibly, was certified platinum within a month of release.

And more importantly, Gallagher’s musicianship and songwriting mastery on the new effort garnered ample critical acclaim. It seems that the elder Gallagher brother wasn’t just sitting around lamenting the passing of the legendary British band.

Gallagher and the “birds”, David McDonnell (guitar), Russell Pritchard (bass), Mikey Rowe (keyboards) and Jeremy Stacey (drums), are currently on a global tour in support of the momentous record. As he prepared for the April 18 Phoenix Orpheum Theater stop on the tour, Gallagher chatted with Examiner about the new disc and life after Oasis
